Bare is Beautiful

Down in the valley, the ice fog cometh!

Capturing the Ice Fog with the iPhone in Monochrome and Color

In the middle of the winter, in the fog of the morning, in the white moon of a dark night, bare and beautiful trees create a season's drama.

For several days last week (January 14th), western Washington in the cool Pacific Northwest was covered with ice fog. The silent dense fog came as Sandburg said it would come ..."on little cat feet."

Each morning, I opened the wooden blinds to discover the abstract art created by the fog during the night. The fog quietly wrapped the bare tree limbs and trunks of the tall cedars. It rolled into the valleys in the mountains, and Olympia disappeared under a thick curtain of grey mist.

Using the iPhone 4, I captured the photographs below, and apps were used to add abstract to the abstract. My favorite apps, Snapseed, HDR Pro, ShockMyPic, and Iris.

Thanks for looking! If you have any questions about how to add a little creative juice to your iPhone photos (or Android), please use the comment section at the end of the this article. Also, hope you will share a shooting tip for foggy weather!

View from the hill into the valley of fog.

Walking from the top of the hill into the valley, I spotted COLORS in the gray soup.
It always amazes me how the Northwest holds its colors throughout the winter season.

Fall 2012 was the beginning of a tremendous startup for new home construction in this area.
From the top of this hill, the new home owners will have a distant view of Mt. St. Helens.

Not quite spring break; let's call it a Color Break!

A color filter was added to this fog scene.
