Dale Chihuly's Glass Art Shines in Tacoma and Seattle

by Janie McRae

I was first introduced to Dale Chihuly's glass art at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art a few years ago. Once you enter the museum, your eyes fall on a Chihuly glass sculpture that has been suspended from the ceiling in the entrance hall. It is an intricate marvel of shining glass art, and it is alive with vivid colors and formidable form. Your first thought: This is not possible!

Another home to Chichuly's art is the Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma, WA. I was amazed at the museum's collection of Chihuly art. What a sight!  What a shimmer! It was a beautiful exhibit inside the museum. Chihuly is well represented in his hometown.
And now, what a day: May 21st! It's the opening of Chihuly's Garden andGlass at the Seattle Center. Under the umbrella of the Space Needle, this exhibit is a collection of about 50 years of Tacoma-native Dale Chihuly's work. Chihuly is known around the world for his glass art and his magnificent installations of his art.

All the photographs below are shots of another Chihuly exhibit located in the Bridge of Glass, a 500-foot pedestrian bridge. This downtown Tacoma crossing (I-705) houses Chihuly's art in glass nooks. Viewing these shining treasures while you are standing over the busy traffic beneath your feet is interesting! :) Hope you enjoy the photography, and I'll let you know more about the Seattle exhibit soon.
